Is my torque converter on its last leg ?
Ok so at WOT my truck sometimes will act like something is disengaged in the drivetrain. Loud bangs follow. Let off the go pedaland it runs/drives fine.Today I was pullin a rather heavy, large double axle trailer loaded with a car. At a stop light Iwent to pull out and the same thing happened, but at a much much lower RPM..You guys think its my converter or my 46re trans. If its the converter I'll rebuild the trans while its out anyways. Just wondered what the general concenses was. I got 108,000 on her now.
A semi cheaper check might be to put the read axle on stands and pull the diff cover and inspect the ring and pinion while spinning a tire. If you see any wear or breakage you can fix that before you blame the tranny. Only cost you the oil to refill it.
If it is the torque converter, get it fixed ASAP before it throws debris into the rest of the tranny.

Have you serviced the tranny lately? Just driving through a bunch of stop signs gave me similar results a while back.
I was driving and the tranny wouldn't upshift. Instead it would just rev real high and then eventually something gave and I heard a loud bang come from under the truck. Nothing broke, but something took a good whack in the drivetrain... I pulled over and just let her rest for a little while. Afterwards I got back on the road and just shifted manually even though it's an automatic. Took it easy, I got home, no problem. Soon afterwards the truck wouldn't upshift once again and was revving real high in 1st or 2nd, can't really remember but no matter what, I still couldn't get into a higher gear when I needed too.
Anyways, solution was that I serviced the tranny. I dropped the pan, checked my shifter bands, got a filter and new Valvoline ATF+4 fluid, and replaced the speed sensor on the driver side of the tranny. In the end, tranny was alright. It was mainly just the speed sensor that wasn't sending the PCM the right signal to allow for up shifts. Yet after the service, I'm sure the fresh fluid and filter didn't do any harm especially when there was a bunch of worn friction material and worn metal particles lying at the bottom of the tranny pan.
The sensor was a dealer item but cost around $30.00. Try replacing that and possibly the fluid and filter if you haven't serviced the tranny lately. It might do the trick, and be sure to check the bands to see if they need any adjusting.
