Simply like the name a y pipe is shaped like a y. This is what a standard dodge has. You have two pipes going into the converter and come out as one. Maybe not a true Y pipe but, similar.

An X pipe is shaped like an x. With that you have two pipes meeting up and then going back to two pipes.

I have heard they were louder and I may try them on my project mustang.

They are both named after the shape, an X pipe is less restrictive.

The x-pipe is designed to give you a better flow and a more even flow as well. Where with the Y two go into one, with the X two come in and go out separately, which is supposed to balance and smooth out the exhaust pulses...just like an H pipe, but with a better flow design. The X pipe is usually the choice when looking for a better exhaust note and a better flow than the H pipe. Themost obviousdifference is that the Y is designed for a single-out, and the X and H are for dual-out.
