Axle question
I broke the front-left axle shaft on my 1994 Ram 1500. I found a guy on the internet that has one for a great price, but I'm confused about the spline count. My research says that I have a Dana 44 system, and the spline count is 30. This guy says his spline count is 15, and it is out of a 1997 Ram 1500. I don't see how that could be unless he has made a lot of changes. My question is this: when you count the spline on an axle, do you count just the "ridges" or do you also count the "valleys"? He is just counting one or the other to get the spline count, so if you are supposed to count both then he actually does have a 30 spline axle.
Thanks,
Ed

He may be confused on which side he is selling you as well.
While all Dodge Dana 30's have 30 spline axles, the intermediate shaft on the passenger side has a different count. It is much lower than 30, but I cannot remember what it is at the moment. The end of the intermediate axle is the one that CAD engages and connects it to the inner shaft.
If you need a "left" side axle shaft (drivers side), then you need the one with a 30 spline end on it as the left axle shaft slides into the spider gears in the differential, that I know for 100% sure.
