Yup sounds kind of like that Catalytic Converter is clogged to me too.

When my TPS went bad it didnt' act like that. It just would surge going down the highway if you had cruise control set was the only time I noticed it. It would just jump up 300 rpms or so then back down then do it again a minute or so later. I replaced the TPS and it fixxed that but maybe it can do other stuff when it goes bad too that mine didn't. I don't know.
I didn't read (speed reading isn't great for comprehension) carefully and posted half-cocked. when my TPS went out it threw a code and before it let go it wouldn't rev above 3000RPMs before shifting no matter how hard I stomped on it.

Hey Guys.. Fairly new here, but wanted to thank you all for the posts/advice. I've been a reader for a couple months, and can say that I had this same issue (amongst others) and when my 97 5.9 did this, it turned out to be a clogged cat. In the absence of any temp readings, I did the old-school method of just unbolting the exhaust manifolds and whacking on it a few times..

With Exhaust/Cat connected - no power, no RPM, running VERY hot when trying to get any HP out of it. When I unbolted things, she revved up like she used to..

Diagnosis was originally a bad fuel pump/clogged fuel filter in the tank.. Trying the Cat-Gut procedure this weekend to see if its 100% fixed.

Thanks again to all the DF members, you guys have helped me a TON!! (and saved me a few $$$ in stealership bills).

any updates on this thread?? I know it's old, but I seem to be having the same issue. It happened on the way to work yesterday, the truck wouldn't go over 3000rpm's and the Check Engine light came on. I had to end up taking a work vehicle home and today when I went to leave work I started it up and it was running a little rough, but when I went to rev it up, it got to 3000rpm and then wouldn't move.. truck started running real rough and engine light came on. I have had a bit of a rattle coming from under the truck. Sound like a clogged cat?? I have gotten quite a bit of good info on this site, thanks guys

Wow....same result here. I thought it was the governor pressure solenoid and sensor....mech said steering column...replaced the linkage and shifter (needed it anyways)...turns out its the CAT....now why didnt I think of that?

^^1+ on cat.

a cloggged cat will cause alot of odd problems that dont add up most of the time, but it's always something simple " usually "
