Need Info: Chng from stock 17" rim to 15" or 16" and bigger tire
I was wondering if anyone could give me some helpful info. I will be returning home soon and have to change my heater core, dash, shocks, installing a K&N PFIK, and was thinking of changing the rims and tires. I've read all the DIY info and threads about the heater core and other stuff but haven't found anything about my next question. I have a '01 Ram 1500 4x4 Off-Road QC 5.9L with over 80K. I currently have the stock 17" rims with Pro Comp 33x12.50 AT. I was thinking of going with a 15" or 16" rim and 35 Pro Comp X-TREME AT. I know it will affect gearing and mine has stock 4.10 or 4.11 (can't remember) but does anyone know if this would be a good idea or would it screw something up to make a change like that? (sorry for such a long opener)
2001 has dual piston calipers, so a 15" rim won't fit unless your grind down the caliper a little bit (which is easy to do) 16" you won't have any problems. If you go offroad alot I'd suggest grinding the caliper and going with the 15" rim. If you tow alot, I'd stick to 16, since there seems to be more 10 ply options for that size rim.
i have 4.10's and ran procomp 16" rims on 35" tall nittos for better then a year.. didnt screw up anything except my gas mileage and maybe some added wear and tear..
35's are a bit large for the stock axles.. i wouldnt suggest going anylarger..ESPECIALLY if you doing some offroading

I appreciate man. Man you guys are quick! Yeah, I expected to take the hit on gas mileage and figured it's add some wear and tear. I don't do much off-roading since I live in Vegas now but I plan to move back to good ol South someday. You have any good suggestions as to shocks? I had looked some at Ranchos, I've heard lots of good things about them. I'm not wanting to spend too much money but can afford something good when I get back to the States.
