Default Mail Order PCM Tuning?

Yes, I searched, but I didn't find what I was looking for.

I used to own a Z28 and I sent the PCM off to get it tuned after I installed gears, headers, CAI, cat-backand other minor bolt-ons since I live 3-4 hours one way from the nearest dyno.

http://www.pcmforless.com/
http://www.madz28.com/- the one I used.

I now have a '98 Ram 5.9 and I am planning pretty much the same mods for it as I had on the Z28. After I searched these forums, the closest thing to pcmforless or madz28 was a b&g tune or sct. However, b&g and sct seemed to be way more expensive ($500+ compared to $225) and they didn't seem to offer the options offered by the Z28 tuners. The thing I liked about the madz28 tune was that it was based on dyno tunes of cars with similar mods to mine so it was "close" to a dyno tune. I was able to get the PCM tuned for everything I listed aboveincluding different tire sizes, shift points, fan turn on temps, etc.

Is there a mail order tune I can get for my Ram like I did for my Z28? If b&g or sct are the same thing then I apologize but they didn't seem like it based on the options I saw.

This is theorder form and, as you can see, it allows you to enter all kinds of different things to tune for. I did not find that on the sct and b&g sites. If there is anything like this out there for our trucks, please direct me to it. If not, then I guess I'll just get a Hypertech or something and not mess with the exhaust.

You can get a mopar performance PCM, but GM computers are way different from Chrysler computers in their ability of being tweaked.

They are the same thing now, but didn't used to be. B&G is using the SCT stuff to flash now. The two options are:1) send them your box and they will flash it and send it back, or2) they will send youtwo or three flashes on a SCTflasher.

I would suggest getting a tuner with three flashes from KRC. The benefit of having the tuner is that if your flash(es) are off then you can let them know where and they can send you an updated flash via email. You then upload the updated flash onto the tuner and consequently onto to the pcm. This procedure can be repeated until the flash is dead on.Also as you mod more, your fuel and timing requirements will obviously change. Your flash file can be tweaked to accomodate those changes using the same procedure.

Mail order tunes are canned tunes, and they are at best a guess. If you're shipping your pcm off to have it done, then every time you need the tune changed, you'll be shipping it off again. Keep in mind when you are searching these forums that up until ~8 mos. ago, B&G was the best way to go if you wanted an aftermarket tune. It's still better than Superchips and Hypertech, but now that SCT has come out with the DC stuff we have wide open programming of the factory pcm. If you need any more info pm me.

Thanks guys. I'll probably just email the SCT guys at KRC or wherever and let them know what my mods are going to be and so on and so forth. I was afraid that the computer would be different than the one in the Camaro and that it would be less customizable. That is fine though; I'm sure SCT is the way to go after the positive reviews I read eariler today.

On a side note, I'm REALLY jealous of my dad right now. Not really, but I wish I had one of these. He pulled up to my house yesterdayin a brand new '08 Hemi Ram that appears to be fully loaded. It says "Big Horn" on the back, is a 4x4, 4 door, etc.and it is black with a gun metal metallic look to it when the sun is shining on it. I bet tires are expensive for it though LOL. IIRC, they are 275/60/20s. That thing has some get up and go too. Oh well though, I'm damn proud to have my 2nd gen.

Get your stuff right, then go spank your old man light to light.

With the SCT, your PCM is just as "customizable" asford or Chevy ECM. There are just fewer options for us. Bascically, if you want wide open tuning SCT is it. With the others, there are alot of different programs out there to choose from.

Thanks guys. I was looking at KRC's site and I came across a performance kit called the Lightning Killer or something like that. I may just hold off on little individual mods and go with that once I save up $5k. It seemed to have pretty much everything in it including a tune and they advertised 320 rwhp. I'm not looking to take it to the track and run 13s or anything like that but I'm sure that package would allow me to pull my boat with ease. Decisions, decisions.

I don't know if you want to tow a whole lotwith the LK package. BTW, Marty at KRC is a real nice guy. Call him and talk to him. Tell him what your looking for, i.e. speed, towing, mix of both, and he'll steer you in the right direction.

I think I finally found what I'm looking for. This seems to be as close to mail order tuning as it can get.

http://www.krcperformance.com/krc/in...&Itemid=26

I haven't talked to them yet because I am still going back and forth arguing with myself over what I want to do to the truck but I assume that with this package, you send the PCM to them, they flash it, then they send it back to you. Either that or I could purchase a PCM from them and have them flash it and send it to me with no downtime. I think I can deal with a little downtime instead of spending $400 for another PCM though. Ouch.

Go with the SCT tuner on that site. The guy that tunes for KRC now is top notch. With the SCT you can get flashes via email without having to ship your box off. The initial investment seems like a lot, but it pays dividends in the long run. The Cam Cal is old stuff. They need to clean up the site a little. It was basically a deal where you ship your pcm to Florida with a list of your mods. They would then ship it to B&G with a list of specs.to have it flashed.

Oh okay, I see. So with this SCT unit I would simply plug it into my computer and load the flashes on it that way through an email? That sounds great to me. I'll have to talk to them about it soon.
