Default Transmission Question

Hey guys im sorry to post another thread about transmissions but here goes. Ive gota 99 1500 with the 5.2 the truck has 151000 on it and the fluid seems pretty red. How would i tell if its slippin or if its on its way out? And i was reading around what does it mean when you adjust the bands what does it do?

normal color for transmission fluid is red, so don't worry about that. worry more if its black, or smells burned, or seems to have a lot of particles floating around in it. slipping is when the engine rpm's jump up during the shift, and the shift seems to take an extra long time before it seems to be pulling again. adjusting the bands is a mechanical adjustment related to the amount of slip. no offense intended, but in my opinion, this adjustment should only be done if you have a problem and some experience. i leave mine alone.

Blazin

Red is tranny fluid color so you are OK. If you see red spots on your driveway then it is a diff story.

Ask any question you like Blaze. Anytime

What did he do while he had it? Burn outs, racing? That stuff is hard on the tranny.

That "later" shifting might be nothing, then again it might be something. But until it starts to do something definitive, I wouldn't worry about it unless you want to pay a shop to take a look.

What are the RPMs before it shifts out of 2nd?

If it starts refusing to shift into a gear, like 4th (overdrive), then you have a problem. If it stops shifting, than you have a problem. Etc.

Forum Search on "Tranny Shift Points".

its done by a cable on the throttle linkage, your buddy might have full throttled it to a point where the cable might have adjusted or stretched just enough.

In the post, it states to move the adjustment in the smallest increments as possible, thats no joke.
too much one way and it shifts too soon, and could burn up your cluthes.
too much the other way and it could do other damage.

so, mark the cable, and move it ever so slightly.

Edit: typo

Common transmission signs of it taking a dump:
[ul][*]RPM jumps when shifting.[*]rattling or a loud static like sound when reversing (when cold) or when shifting in to gears. it goes away when warm.[*]no TQ lockup, or RPM jumps while in TQ Lockup.[*]O/D Off Light comes on. That can mean a whole host of things, for me it meant over heating and bye bye clutches.[*]hunting when driving. RMPs can "float" 300-500 or more while driving.[*]dirty fluid with particles - burnt clutches.[*]irratic shifting - bands or fuild or valve body.[/ul]
I am sure there are more, but these are the common ones and most of those happen to me, then i got my slushy turd pusher rebuilt.
