Transmission overheating - dodge newbi Q
Well i buoght a new radiator and ALL the plumbing lines from tranny to radiator and back. also going to get the B&M tranny cooler suggested above. take all the parts to my transmission guy and have him install it all and check/change out the filter and do a inspect on the tranny itself. hopefully nothing tooo much wrong with it. still tring to find a schematic for the tranny see what else i can dig up tonight. I am not too worried about replacing the the tourque converter or even a rebuild. i don't really want to put more than 1k into the tranny right now. if i am looking at a total rebuild i am going to REBUILD it for complete off roading and ready for bigger tires. but thats a whole differant thread to discuss that.
After writing this i thought to myself and don't know why i didn't think about this before but you are right... if the flow is being restricted it is becasue something is failing and clogging it up.
However, wouldn't i be able to see particulate in the fliud on the dipstick?
Also when i check the fliud level it is hard to tell what the level is as there is fluid all over the place and there is a bit of bubbles on the dipsick too...??

Alright I found a service manual for a 2000 is that same tranny used in a 98?
Also i should notethat the transmission shifts perfectly in all gears up and down. no noises clunking grinding and i am farily adept at pick up those sounds

well i just ordered a transmission cooler as well as a romote filter so once the new radiator and piping is installed there should be no reason to have a clogging or over heating resulting from components outside the tranny with normal filter maintnance might get a tempature sending unit for ****s and giggles once i get everthing narrowed down.
Well i went down to my local tranny shop and spoke ith the owner there. He asured me that the root of the problem is as everyone else has discovered, the check valve clogging. he say he usually just throws it out. he also assured me that if the tranny is shifting fine it shouldn't need any work and to just change out the cooling lines and i should be okay. so this weekend its a reaplce of everything i talked about above and check teh pan for any large fragments if no large fragments are there i think i will be okay. if there is i'll take it into him.

The check valve is in the short rubber hose that connects to the lower line at the radiator.
Do you have an aux cooler? Or do the trans lines run directly from the radiator to the trans.
The factory aux cooler is difficult to see as it is between the condenser and radiator but you should see small tubes running out from between and connecting to the radiator.
An aftermarket cooler should come with the proper adapters to hook it up. Normally you don't have to cut the factory lines to install.
Check the the trans fluid. if it is dark brown or black you probably have internal damage. [&o]

****Hey I have a 97 1500 sport which is doing the exact same thing only the transmission starts slipping after about 1/4 mi or less then I have to shut it down and let it cool. Could excessive trans fluid cause the slippage being it shows theres more than should be in the trans.

Best to remove or drill out that check valve with a 5/16 drill bit, clean the junk out of the line and hook back up. Those check valves can create a disaster for your transmission due to overheating.
Drain some tranny fluid till you get to the right level when checked idling in neutral. Overfilling can lead to foaming, causing the pump to be pumping foam (air).
