How to distinguish year's of 2nd gens

Alright... long story short. When you look at an older car, you can tell the difference between the years because of headlights, body style changes, tail lights, grills, among other things. I know there are a few differences between some of the older 2nd gens vs. the newer 2nd gens. For a few off the top of my head... How bout the chromemirrors (isnt that 97 & below?). The... black bar that goes across the bottom of the tailgate for some. The HD steering in was for a year or two. Another would be the cab light change.... etc. There are the suttle differences, but... where can I find out what changes were made / year? Just kinda curious

Thanks in advance,
pcfixerpro

94-97s have chrome mirrors and no 2nd doors 98-02 have the plastic mirrors and different dash and seats and the quad cab option and 98 has different side moldings the longer cab lights are for 98 and newer i think the short ones are 94-97 the black bar on the tail gate was a option base models didnt have it basicly they changed majorly form 97-99 98 models were preatty much the same but 99 is when most of the major changes are on

Some changes occured right in the middle of 2001 as well.

Taken from dodgeram.info:

[ul][*]Ram trucks built from January 1, 2000 to July 1, 2000 are referred to as 2001 models. [ul][*] The early 2001 models have drum brakes in the rear.[/ul][*] Ram trucks built from July 1, 2000 to July 2001 are referred to as 2001.5 models by Ram owners (DC still calls them 2001 models). Most 2001.5 models differ from 2001 models by: [ul][*] Added - disk brakes in the rear[*]Deleted - Vanity mirror lights.[*]Deleted - Rear cup holders were deleted.[*]Deleted - Insulation under the hood on diesel models.[*]Deleted - Front and Rear grab handles on passenger side.[*]Deleted - SLT tailgate protector[*]Deleted - Amber Fire Pearcoat paint[*]Deleted - plastic rear wheel liners (P/N 5534 6010 SHIELD, Wheelhouse)[*]Deleted - self-Dimming rear view mirror[*]Silver radio antenna (was painted black in previous models)[*]Cowl rubber seal size reduced by 1/2[*]Phase out of Cab Clearance lights on 2500's.[*]One less leaf spring[/ul][/ul]
EDIT: And as far as the sport models go, the front bumper is different. Up until 1998 I believe, they were all plastic monotone (as opposed to "normal" chrome/steel bumpers with a black rubber piece on top). After that, they changed the sports to have quad headlamps and moved the fog lights out farther.

1999 the passenger side air bag shut off was moved up and created acell phone storage compartment. Headlight switch changed too. I look at the mirrors to guess the year allthough a lot of people including mehave upgraded to the 2002 style tow mirror so that isn't as accurate anymore.

That "cell phone storage compartment" is where there would be heated seat controls if a truck came equipped with them.

Just a random fact.

RWAL manufacturer, front brakes and brake master cylinder diameters changed frequently
year to year
as well as seats,
and some late 2001.5 had rear disc brakes

This is incorrect. My truck was built on September 10, 2000. It has rear drum brakes, passenger side grab handles, and plastic rear wheel liners.

I thought it was the wheel style. 94-95 had chrome wheels, 96 had a different wheel but black mirrors. BTW they are all plastic

It could still possibly be correct. It says most 2001.5 models. Yours might be one of those exceptions.
