Default Locker or LSD

We have a 1999 4 x 4 Dodge Ram Quad cab and would like to know if it it best to put in a Diff Lock or a LSD. We tow a caravan and drive up the beach so we want it to be reliable.

Thanks.

Your not supposed to tow with a locker. The only exceptions I have found would be the ARB Air locker (not auto as said above, prb a typo) as well as the powertrax unit. The arb is very expensive and the powertrax.... well lets just say Sirhilton17 has not had luck with those (see here... https://dodgeforum.com/m_1239634/tm.htm). You can tow with the powertrax and you can visit their website to get a better idea if that is for you or not if you want to go that way. I suggest you look into a LSD. I am planning to put in a Detroit Truetrac here in a few months. The other popular LSD on the site is the Auburn LSD. Im sure someone will chime in later.... but I say LSD without a doubt.

I would vote for a LSD. Detroit's are nice, I don't care too much for Auburns though.

I would think in the rear you would want an LSD unit for street drivability reasons, a locker will act really funny on 90* turns and u-turns. If you're going to lock anything, lock the front, not the rear.

I agree that a LSD would work best for you, better traction than an open yet still streetable.
Not to completely thread jack but whyshouldn't you tow with a locker?

Thanks for all the info.

In Australia we don't have many Dodge Rams so there isn't many people who you can trust to work on them.

We found out that we have a LSD in the back but it isn't working properly, so we will get that fixed and we have decided to put a locker in the front with a switch in the cab, than you can turn it on and off when you want.

This is a great site for finding out things about your truck.

As for fixxing the LSD in the rear you would be better off to just replace it with a Detroit Tru Trac or Auburn LSD. The stock ones are junk if they are the same ones they use here in the US.
