Default torque converter sensor

I recently had a problem when I hit the brakes it seemed as if the tranny wasn't disengaging, similar to not hitting the clutch on a five speed. I was told to disconnect the torque converter sensor and see if it still happened. It hasn't happened since, but I've lost my overdrive now that the sensor is disconnected. Should I replace the sensor, or am Ilooking at a bigger problem?
