Default engine cleaning

my engine needs to be cleaned of the mud and crap.. im unsure if i wanna clean it tho... for those of u that clean yours.. how do u clean ur engine? what steps do u take to make sure everything is fine under the hood? do u leave the motor running while you clean? what cleaners do you use?

i shut my truck off then just spray all the crap off with a hose and if its really bad i use degreaser and just pray that all over every thing then let it sit for about 5 min the hose it off.

i just go to the car wash and use the 'engine degreaser' setting. shut truck off, spray all areas of the engine, top, bottom, sides, tranny, drive line, axles, almost everything - but don't spray directly on the distributor with high pressure. let it soak a little while. rinse with the sprayer well away from the engine to keep the water pressure down to a minimum level. crank truck and drive home. water doesn't hurt it - otherwise it wouldn't run in the rain.
