Default Gear Differential

Can someone tell me how to find the it on my truck? I need to change it because I have 38's on it and I believe it still has the stock gearing on it.

Not sure on the size but your going to want to run 4.56's, those would be the best for your tire size.

Your gear ratio determines the amount of times your driveshaft spins for every turn of your tires. For example if you have 3.55 gears, your driveshaft spins 3.55 times per every 1 rotation of your tires, and 4.10 times for every rotation of your tires if you have 4.10 gears.

For 38 inch tires I would get 4.88 gears (lowest you can go on a the 1500's axels)
or if you have a 2500 I would reccommend either 4.88 or 5.13 gears.

No Second gen dodges have Solid axels in every model. But the 1500 only has a dana 44 up front which will not hold up to 38s very long, unless you keep the differential open, and don't really take it anywhere. I'd start looking into a set of Dana 60s if it's a 1500. Lots more options there anyway.

4.88's would be the only option, 4.56's would be a dog, some people are runnin 35's with 4.56's

The gears are in the rear axle. I don't know that we can tell you how to change them just what would work best. This is one of those things you should take it to a shop for.

No Ramit, unlike us, he has a solid front axle, not saying he won't wear a few front end components a little quicker, or have a problem if he's locked up and in heavy crud, he still doesn't have the "horse" front axles that a 3/4 ton truck has. But for on pavement and easy to moderate off-road use, he's a lot better off than we would be with 38's.

To the original poster, you should have a tag on the rear axle somewhere with the ratio. Also there is a sticker in the glove box on the 3rd gens, I can't remember if my 2nd gen had one, but it's worth a look. It won't really matter though, because there ain't a stock gear set that would be good with 38's. Go to 4.56's minimum or better yet 4.88's...

Well either axle then. He asked where he could find the differential so he could change his gears. If he doesn't know what the differential is and has to ask where to find it I highly doubt he can install gears.
