i thought about a lifter as well guys, but I don't think that car has lifters, I think its overhead cam. (I could be wrong though)
I was wondering how long that would take for some one to figure that out..

It probably has some kind of hydraulic lash adjuster. While not technically a lifter it still performs the same function.

How loud is the ticking? I would guess sticky lifter, or ignition noise from a bad boot or arcing wire.
It's louder then that. I really think it might be a lifter too, but i'm not certain. I'm having a really hard time finding a manual for this thing so I can see how this little engine is made. Before I changed the oil last, I tried a bottle of this stuff that is supposed to be a "valve repair". I wasn't expecting much, but thought i'd give it a try. Basically, you run the engine till normal operating temp, shut it off, pour this stuff in the crankcase and immediatly drive the car again for 5-15 minutes. I did this thinking it might clean out some stuff perhaps. No smoke or anything occured. I then drained and refilled the oil with some 5w-30 and a can of STP. I know the STP is high viscosity and will thicken the oil, but it also coats moving parts so that at next startup, they have a layer of protection. Since it really didn't seem to help though, the next oil change, i'm going to skip it and use just the 5w-30 (that's the recommended oil too).

So, if it is a sticking lifter, is there any fix other then a remove and replace? I'm fine to do that, but hate working on an engine I don't know without a manual and some specs or parts lists to go by. I've asked around on a Swift/Metro forum, and so far haven't found what i'm looking for. Might just try to find a service manual on eBay.

I'll see about checking the oil pressure too and will change the oil filter just in case that is something as rambler suggested.

+1
Unless it's some kind of race car, the lobes just don't slap the tops of the valve stem. I don't know what they're actually called, but they are essentially lifters. I don't think it would be lash adjusters because I'm sure thier is preload involved. I just can't figure out the whole 2-3 sec. on/off thing.

I would drive it for a while and see if it gets better or worse. It could just be that the thing sat for a while. I don't really believe inall of the 'mystery oils'. I know that some are probably good, but some may gum your motor up.

Manual would definatelybe good for torque specs, tricks, and such. You can probably dissasemble the lifters and clean them, but, forthe work to get to them vs. the cost of a new set, I would install new ones if it were me.

my bad guys, I was under the impression that the camshaft ran right against the rockerarms, that is the way ford does their overhead cams. Either way this seems like a pretty easy fix, just remove the valve cover and replace the lifter thingies

The cam may very well run right against the rocker arm.
In this cut away you can see the lash adjuster (lifter) on one end of the rocker arm and the valve on the other. This is a common design for OHC engines.

There is also this style called "cam on bucket". Popular on european imports and motorcycles.

That is hilarious PA.

Rabbler, thanks for those pics, very good info. Aren't those designs dual overhead cam though? This would be SOHC.
