Replacing 5.2L Need Info
1st time replacing an engine and I need a little help. Just bought a 1998 Ram 1500 for $500.00 with a blown engine. Body is in great shape so it's worth a remanufactured engine at $1350 (long Block).
My question is: does the transmission have to come out in order to pull the old engine? Haynes manual says to remove the xmission. I always thought you could just disconnect it and pull it back W/O completely taking it out. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Dont need to pull the trans, hood/grille or front end.
After the fan, shroud, rad, alt, pwr steering pump, fuel rails starter, tb/kegger are out. Pull thedistributor then hook the picker boom as low as possible in the valley and lift it slightly. Then remove the motor mount bolts and disonnect the trans/tc slide forward a bit and up. Dont need to remove the hood or front end if the boom is in the bottom of the valley. You can pull it out over the front or the fender, go slowly and its np.

Forgot to mention, before pulling the motor forward and up be sure to have a jack under the front of the trans as well to support it. After the mtr is out,I put a couple longbolts in theholes in the middleof the trans case. Then place a2x4 from frame rail to frame rail and rest the bolts on that to support the trans.
Don't forget to brace your tranny from underneath as you will need to loosen/remove the tranny cross member to get the engine out and without the engine to hold to in the front it will lean forward.

Also, use a small c-clamp and clamp it on the lower front of the tranny housing to keep the torque converter in place.
