P0441 Code
OK everyone.... after all the work I did on this motor last week, I got the code...P0441.. the evap code. I dosconnected the battery, tightened my gas cap..hoping it was just that... but the CEL came back on again after a few days of driving to and back from work. I did the search... seems it could be a few things....suggestions in previous posts were the canister getting feul in it.. needing to either change the charcol..or replace.. could be the selenoid, I did a quick vacuum check.. but will do a more thorough job tomorrow when I get home from work....I dont want to just throw parts at this problem.. I'd like to diagnose this through and find the problem and fix it... so.. I need help in trying to diagnose this....can you guys give me a hand in the first steps I should do to try to find this problem? Is there a way to test the selenoid?
When I was taking everything apart for the plenum repair..Thereare 2 vacuum lines from the passenger side intake ports.. one to the PCV...the other smaller line.. branches off shortly after it comes from the intake..when I took one of the lines off that branch.. ( this is the line that runs along side my throttle cable and runs under my battery tray..) it was holding a vacuum.. I could here the pressure sucking when I undid it from the branch connector...The two times its showed up.. it was after about 30 minutes running...
So far.. Ichecked a few lines.. tightened the cap...have reset the PCM, so I guess now its time to dig...Where should I startI'll be reading the manual tonight so any ideas you guys can come up with.. let me know...
Oh.. a question...I reset the PCM... if the code comes on... what will the PCM do if this code remains on...till I figure this out...I dont want anything else more serious to start going on..should I keep resetting it till I figure this out? I just poured some money into this motor
I was actually expecting the 180 T-stat to throw a code... so whenthe CEL showed up.. Ithought for sure it was that...but nope..
Thanks in advance for any help people...I need to work this out....
EDIT: I also wanted to post.. I still have a slightly rough idle.. dont know if thats a related symptom...I changed alot of things so its gonna be hard to tell.. ( plugs, wires, cap, rotor...went from bosch to Autolite's..)

P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow
This isn't caused by a leaky gas cap.
Usually it is caused by a bad purge solenoid or disconnected (broken) vacuum hose.
The purge solenoid should be on the driver side of the engine up on the intake manifold. It controls vacuum to the charcoal canister to suck the gas fumes out of it. It should have 2 hoses on it. one goes to the intake manifold and the other goes underneath to the charcoal canister.
The solenoid usually makes a ticking sound and you should be able to feel it if the engine is hot and idling if you touch the solenoid.
It will set this code if the solenoid is stuck open or closed or if the vacuum lines are disconnected.
Check the lines first.
Then see if the solenoid is ticking
Finally pull off the solenoid and see if it is full of black granules. If the charcoal canister lets go the the charcoal granules get sucked up the vacuum hose into the solenoid and keep the solenoid from sealing when it's supposed to be closed.
A very slow upstream o2 sensor can cause this too.

Thanks for the reply Rabbler.... I had already read the TSB before seeing your post and did some reading in a few manuals and on the internet last night.. I'll start with a Vac line check when I get home from work and since the truck should be good and hot I'll see if I can tell if the selenoid is ticking....there was no charcoal in it last night when I pulled it off.. but give it a good going over.. then check for voltage as well....I'll post back when I go through everything... thanks again!
Mine throws the same code every once in a while.
I replaced the solenoid and it still codes.
Checked the lines for cracks,.. Can't find any.
I just keep a pocket-scanner in the center-console
and clear the code when it comes on.

It could be that your evap charcoal canister got "water logged", meaning it sucked up some gas. Mine did that and it throws the code from time to time. One of these days, I am going to open the canister and replace the charcoal and the filter.
