I sell guns at Bass Pro in the summer. I always tell people to go with a 9mm for home defense. It has less kick, less flash, and is less likely to make a woman (or anyone) flinch, cheaper ammo=more practice. I am sure they want me to sell the high dollar 40's but I don't. I even sold a person a Mossberg 12ga pump for home defense! I am not sure, but anyone with a 9mm hole in them won't want to steal your stuff or keep coming in your direction.
Your best bet is a used police riot shotgun-pump, and learn to rack it hard. Why a pump? In the dead of night there is no sound in the world like a pump shotgun being racked. Even if you have no shells, people will leave. The problem is they tend to knock of arms and legs and make a mess. My choice: stainless SW Model 66 Combat Magnum in 357 with a 6" and some sweeet Pakmayr grips (rubber with the rosewood inlay). 125g sjhp rounds. But I bought that years ago being full of **** and vinegar.
