What do I need to convert my 99 Ram 1500 to a 5 speed?

a new truck. jk. there is quite an expense from what i have seen. a new decent tranny alone will run you at least 1500-2000. if you want the 5 speed experience on an automatic, get a floor mounted shifter instead of the column shifter. you could do that swap for a couple hundred.

They say its easier to find a junk truck somewhere that you can ****** all the parts off of. Youll need all the mounting hardware for the clutch pedal as well as the linkage and youll need to get a steering column without the auto shifter in it....

I have had my truck for 9 years, bought it when I was 18 and it happened to have a 5 speed which I was not fond of at that time. I thought about converting it many times in the early years but have grown to love it. I had to replace the clutch for the first time at 120K miles and not because the plate was worn out, but the pilot bearing went bad. I now have 185K miles on the truck and I would not trade it in for anything. I would suggest just buying a truck with a 5 speed because I don't think you will find anyone who has done that swap and will say it was easy and cheap. The NV4500 5 speed trans is $2,000 new and not to include the trans mount, pedals, floor assembly, driveshaft length difference, clutch, and any wiring you'll need to convert it. You could end up spending $3-$4,000 to do this right.

i'm pretty sure that everyone on here with an auto...wishes they had a standard. The truth is that it is just unrealistic. I myself have thought and pondered and what I have come to realize is that for the money to change over to a 5 speed, when my tranny goes...I can buy a APS, or Dr Evil tranny for less money. These trannys are built much better and will probably last until I wear the truck out(around 200,000 miles)(I'm at 87,000 now, I figure around 100,000-110,000 I will probably change the transmission

Amonst the Pro's here the vote seems to go with. Let the tranny die & get an APS or Dr Evil replacement. The Pro's call them bulletproof.

That is my plan. But I am at 127000 & the tranny is silky.

Agreed.

The APS and Dr. Evil trannys you guys are talking about. Are they still auto?
