My brother just picked up a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 4x4 model with the 5.2L engine.

I'm curious whether this truck would be able to tow a car and car trailer (not one of those giant enclosed trailors, just the cheapy things you see at like U-haul). The car weighs about 3800, not sure what a trailer weighs.

It'll pull it, but it'll be a dog. If it's got an auto trans, ALWAYS have the overdrive turned off when pulling any trailer. Also, have him do a full tranny service before he tows anything if it is an auto.

it will definately dog on acceleration, but will be stable on the highway if towed there. Definately make sure the OD is off because your tranny will overheat. Also plan on getting 7-9 MPG while towing, which is what i get towing my 3000lb boat.

i tow a 2500lb camper and my 5.2 does great not much of a dif at all in power or mpg i still got about-12

does anyone know how much a tranny cooler would cost to have installed? (parts and labor). is it worth it? i'm guessing it is a GOOD idea.?

its always good to have one, also have a tranny temp guage installed, this way you will always know when your stressing the tranny. if you haul or tow alot, i highly recommend it. Tranny cooling kits are not very expensive and can be installed rather easily.
