Shifting Problems after Trans fluid change
Hi. My son is having problems with the automatic transmission in his 1999 Dodge Ram 4x4 pickup. It has 140K miles on it.
There were no shifting problems until he drained the fluid, changed the filter, installed ATF-+4 fluid.
He is now having difficulty trying to get it to upshift out of 1st gear. This is after leaving home and driving 500 miles to where he now lives. We triple checked the fluid level before he left and it seemed to shift normally until tonight (about a week later).
Would mixing the ATF +3 and ATF +4 have anything to do with this?
Thanks.

going from +3 to +4 would not do it seems like its starving for fluid .. please check the check valve (anti drain back valve) that the bottom hose pressure line into the rad , quick way to see if you got fluid going thru is to wrench off the top line and put the truck in (N) while running and quick put it in park , if it flows there will be a mess , then there is no issues with the check valve , no fluid then theres your problem , then you gotta take the bottom line off and blow air thru it (blow air with the flow of fluid not blow from reverse , damage it) if you dont want to deal with the mess see if there is any heat from the top line feels cool thats another way to tell ... if everything checks out and line is good , then you got other problems..
simple stuff 1. check fluid level , truck running in (N) hot , check level
2. drop the trans pan check the filter
rember trans fluid expands when hot , mite over filled it...GOOD LUCK !!!

Did you adjust the bands when you serviced the tranny? You should check band tension every time you drop the pan on the transmission because you wont be in there for aother 30k-40k miles.
The band that's responsible (i think) for kickdown has an adjustor screw/locknut located on the outside of the trany just above the shift linkage connections. It is a torx with about an 18mm nut on it.
Tighten it to 80in/lb. then back it off about 2 to 2-1/2 turns and lock the nut. The FSM has the specs and procedure for adjusting the bands. Verify before trying.
This sounds like a problem I had with mine. A band adjustment did the trick.
