Have a 1996 1500 Ram with a 46RE transmission and a 360 CID engine (4 X 4). It will shift just fine when it is first started (Shifts into O.D. fine cold)but when it get warm or ran about 5 miles and you stop it will not shift from 2 to 3. I have changed the trans fluid, new filter and adjusted the bands but this has not helped. The truck has 279,000 miles on the truck but do not have any history. Any help appricated. Thank You

 

are you sure you got enough fluid in it ? or maybe to much in it ? check while tran is hot , running , (N) WITH THE EBRAKE ON... another thing is to check your check valve (that the lower line going into the rad (pressure) line .(how to check is to see if the top line is hot) or wrench off the top line and see if trans fluid comes out ( gotta be quick when you do this put it in (N) then park quick) ...When you drop the pan see any metal on the magnet ? heavy sludge buildup ?

 

The fluid level is right in the middle of O.K. I do have fluid going to the cooler. The magnet had about 1/8" build up all around it but it was very fine, no big pieces and what was their was like paste. The transmission was very clean inside and had no sludge build in it.
Another thing about it, the truck can set 15 to 20 min. and you can start it up and take off and it will shift just fine till you stop and take off again like at a stop light of sign.
