Default tie rod question

I have a clunk in my front end that matches wheel speed. It goes away if i put any pressure on the wheel. I went under the truck to look around and found that the tie rod and drank link twist very easily. They twist enough to hear a clunk. Would bad tie rods make a clunk that matches wheel speed?

Default RE: tie rod question

I doubt it's a tie rod. If the noise is speed related it could be a wheel bearing or a tire that is separated. More likely a bearing. Is this truck a 4WD? You might look at the "U Joints" on the front end if it is. Look for the obvious first: marks on the side of a tire, etc. Usually a person can "twist" the rods between the tie rod ends pretty easily. If there is "play" within the tie rod ends they need to be replaced anyway (lateral play, as in the ball loose in the socket).

Jack it up and see if the tire/wheel has any play when you grasp the top and bottom and try to move it back and forth. If so, again, it points toward wheel bearings.
