Default Recon cab lights installation

hey, i just got a set of smoked cab lights for my 1999 Ram 1500. I dont have factory lights so I will have to do the installation. And before i do anything, i wanted to know some things, I have heard before that when you take the headliner down there are "factory marks" that are there for the alignment of the lights. Is this true? if not does anyone know the distances between the lights? i have also heard that there was a live wire already there above the headliner? Really i dont know a whole lot. so if anyoneknows anythingabout these lights and the installation of them, an info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Default RE: Recon cab lights installation

I've just done it a few months back. Yes, there are "factory marks", which are actually holes molded ito the inner layer of steel. To peg the centers, I found a 3/8's socket to barely fit in the hole, then drilled through the driver hole with a 3/8's bit and presto! Right through the center! My hardest part was making sure the lights didn't sit crooked on the center holes, but maybe someone else can help more than I can. And no, there is no wire up there to tap into. Go down to where the wires go from the fuse box to the firewall, and for my 99 it was a black wire with a yellow tracer, but just to be sure, stick the point of a voltmeter through the insulation and check for voltage on for parklights and headlights, and off otherwise. Then just tap into that! This way, they're fused. Some people tie in behind the headlight switch, but if it shorts, I't could melt the switch. With my kit, LED bulbs came with it, but I bough OEM bulbs, and liked them way better, so make sure before you caulk them down. Hope this helps and good luck!!

P.S. Don't buy a kit for the template, cause it's one for a 3rd gen....
