i have a 96 ram 1500 and im in need of new axles i found someone who has half ton axles from a 78 ram charger rebuilt 1000 miles ago with 4.56 gear which would run perfect with my 35s . my question is will they bolt up to my truck with little to no fab ?
I don't know how you'd mount the front. The rear probably wouldn't be bad. Maybe a little narrow. The front on a 78 is leaf sprung. You're missing a lot of bracketry to mount that in. Thenyou have to think about what kind of u-joints they had. Where the fronts drum brakes then? Steering miiiight be the same. So many things involved.
they would work, but only with acouple of days and alot of welding. Steering is different, swaybars, coil/leafspring, control arms. Whats wrong with your axles, I'd suggest repairing them, if you can
+5 to Aubrey... don' t waste your time with vintage axles that eat front bearings like popcorn. I won't even comment on the all the rework and welding, I get a headache just thinking about it.
