Default Dodge Transmission

I have a '98 5.9 2 wheel drive. Tonight on my way home from filling the gas tank the truck decided it didn't want to shift higher than 2nd. It would rev up high in first and take forever to shift up to 2nd, then it just would not shift. Anybody have simialar problems? I need to do the plenum too, so how much does the usual automatic tranny rebuild cost? Thanks.

If you do a search on this forum, you will get a lot of information from what people have experienced. You will want to check the fluid first, and locate any leaks if there are any.

I personally am getting a new tranny instead of having mine rebuilt. The new one will be from APS and will cost just over $3,500.00. I would suggest based on the research I've done to go with either APS or Dr. Evil. Fastman trannies have been talked about but nobody has posted that actually has one, and the warranty is a little lacking. They were quick to answer my questions when I spoke with them, but without hearing from somebody who actually has one, I feel a little leery. I can say that the fastman throttle bodies are very well done and the customer service is excellent. If you go the rebuild route, beware!!! Be VERY PICKY on where you take it to have it done. There are too many stories about those who have had them rebuilt, only to have them rebuilt again later down the road. (many times not that much later I might add)

The tranny I'm going to get from APS starts out as a brand new Mopar tranny, then is beefed up with many better internals, some of which are custom made for durability. It also comes with a 2year, unlimited mileage warranty and also covers racing, off-roading, hauling, etc. Wayne does the work personally and is very enthusiastic about it. You can easily tell that he loves what he does which says a lot about the quality of product you'll get from him. He treats you like a friend and not just another customer. I have bugged him many times already about various questions, some of which required detailed answers, and he made sure he answered everything in a way that I understood. I am anxious to get mine ordered from him. I will also be getting the intake plenum plate kit from him as well when I order the tranny.

Be careful on making this decision. Many times cheaper in the beginning means more expense later. If you intend on keeping your truck for a long time, then spend a little extra now and save headaches later. In my opinion, if you don't plan on keeping the truck, or driving it all that much, then a quality rebuild for around a couple grand would probably get you by, pretty much like the original from the factory. If this truck needs to last you a while, and you use it for any tougher driving than Sunday afternoon cruising, then you might want to consider a quality replacement instead. Whatever you do, just don't go the cheapest route... You'll end up regretting it.

Mine did the same thing. If I stoped put in in park then back in drive it would shift untill I stopped at the red light. Then it would get stuck in second again. Two weeks after this started it was slipping and would barely move the truck. I got a heavy duty rebuild for $2,500 in Wisconson. The places around here are $1,800 all the way up to about $4,000 for a rebuild. I am very happy with my rebuild, but do your resuarch on a good shop.

APS all the way. I've typed a ton of info about them before it's no need for me to do it again. If you want to read more in detail search for one of my older threads.
