Default 2500 tranny into a 1500?

i found a good deal on a rebuilt 2500 tranny. it is from a 1996 2500 4x4 Gas. i have a 96 1500 4x4 gas and was wondering if the tranny would work in mine.

As long as they are both V8s, I think it should be OK. Both 46RE I believe.

I've never heard of a 44RE for our model years, Dakota or Ram.

== Ram 1500 ==
1994-1995 V6: 42RH
1994-1995 V8: 46RH
1996-2001 V6: 42RE
1996-2001 V8: 46RE

We're talking just automatics here, of course. Not sure about the manuals. The trannies might have been used a little longer than that, maybe 2002 model year at least because even though the body style changed, they didn't release the Hemi engine until 2003 (they still used the 5.9L Magnum V8 for the most part), which if memory serves, also came with a different transmission, the 47RE I think.
