We analyzed and tested both of these additives at Exxon.
Marvel Mystery oil is 30% varsol (charcoal lighter fluid) and 70% 30wt base oil some red dye and wintergreen fragrance. It is from the late 1920s.
Avblend is very light weight paraffinic base oil (sewing machine oil)with 1% ether and blue dye. It is from the late 1950s. If it is absorbed by the metal, why doesn't it leak out of the can?
These are solvent type products. Some people find them beneficial for sticky valves or some sludge dispersal. If you are depending on them for either of these reasons, you have bigger problems.
Both evaporate within hours in an engine. Neither one provides any corrosion protection or anti-wear benefit. Neither one will harm anything in the recommended concentration.

Even official Marvel Mystery Oil (now owned by Turtle Wax)
does not think
it is the best thing to add to Diesel Fuel
and has put together
its own special additive for diesel:
http://www.marvelmysteryoil.biz/main.taf?p=1
sample quote
Marvel Diesel Supplement not only increases fuel economy by 8 percent and keeps fuel injectors clean and lubricated, it also improves the cold flow properties of ultra low sulfur diesel to prevent gelling and improve vehicle performance in cold weather. Adding Marvel Diesel Supplement can decrease diesel fuel’s cold flow point from -5° to -40°. Drivers can feel the effects of Marvel Diesel Supplement in their vehicle’s performance as well. A single dose will boost ULSD fuel’s cetane rating by three numbers – using a double does increases the cetane rating six numbers.
=====
Be sure to ask for you money back
if you don't get a 8% MPG increase,
because Turtle Wax public relations might well refund your money
as a manner of corporate policy

29.5 mpg.... tough to get good mileage when your average speed climbs above 80... Still in San Jose for at least today, tomorrow I will top off & add the 2S assuming I'm not heading to SJ again...
Marvel Mystery is perfect for when you've found an old car that's been stored for a long time without being run. A few tablespoons full down each plug hole and let it soak in overnight to get past the rings and saturate the bore. That way, when attempting to turn the engine over, the rings won't stick and the bore won't get scored.
also for thosw who dont know... I regularly put 16 oz of 2 stroke oil in each tank on the truck (diesel) and 16 oz of Power Service Diesel. some say it's too much of each, I say it's easier to measure.... If it were an issue I think I'd be seeing some affects by now (it's been almost 90k miles on the stuff)... one nice thing about the CTD... as the mileage piles on, the mpg goes up (to a certain point).
my best mileage I just got coming back from WA over 300 miles was 20.58 mpg, previous best was 19.5x going up loaded with a bedroom set in the bed of the truck. beyond that, 19.0 almost 1 year ago (sig pic weekend) coming back from mt whitney. I had to totally baby it to get that 19.0 and I thought I just won the lottery after calculating the mpg. 3 things have changed since the 19.0 run... driving style has changed, different performance box settings and and approx 30k more miles on the motor.

I went with a friend from Missouri to Michigan July 30th through August 4th for a classic VW gathering. He drove his 2006 Jetta Wagon, with it loaded down with him, me, my son, and a bunch of assorted crapola. He was pulling an average of 32-35mpg the whole trip.
Sorry for not getting back to this thread... had an issue with the work & jetta. had too many trips to the bay area to do the test, and the jetta's being replaced with this bad boy... picked this guy up cheep at $6800 bux. needed tires, t-stat & a cooling piece that cost a whole $20 bux. to be on the safe side I'm swapping the timing belt & tensioner as soon as the parts get here. a 180* t-stat is also in route...
