Default 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 - Front axle question

Im working on a truck for a friend, it has a SAS in the front (not sure if they are all like this). Anyways, he thought the wheel bearing was bad, so he bought a new front hub w/ a bearing, and we found out the u-joint is completely shot. Looking at it further, the axle u-join end has a lot of play going into the axle housing... does this thing just sit on splines inside there? Or whats up? Why would there be so much play?

Just need these questions answered, and maybe a few more as time goes on!!! Always worked on IFS so this is new to me, thanks a ton!!

see the pics here. http://www.pavementsucks.com/tech/hub.php
the outside end of the axle rides in the hub bearing.
the inside end rides inside the diff.
the shaft is not supported by the axle tube, so yes it has clearance all around, with just a dust boot thing.
