Default transmission problem

Hi new here so any help would be greatly apreciated.
I have a 96 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with 5.9L engine and auto tranny.
My problem is that when my truck is in overdrive it makes a whinning sound from the transmission
I also pulled the computer codes and came up with P0740 torque converter clutch circuit malfunction.
I took it to my mechanic today and had him drive it he said that in order to get rid of the noise I would have to replace the transmission. He also said the torque converter was slipping. I didnt think of it at the time but I was wondering if the torque converter is my problem why cant I just replace it? instead of getting a different tranny. the one in the truck now has only about 40,000 miles on it. Its a rebuilt one. the transmission dosent seem to have any other problems.Just a very annoying noise. Also I have been driving it this way for about 10,000 miles. thanks for any ideas or help.
