Default Proper operation of 4WD - any tips?

Well if you read my other post, about my transfer case I just want to make sure it wasn't something I did. The manual says shift into 4WD under 55. what else should I know about using 4WD. Do the wheels need to be straight ? What if I'm in reverse ? Whats the proper way and when do I disengage it ? Any tips are apprecieated. THanks

Don't run 4wd on dry pavement. That's about all you need to know.

also when I had my 96 Dodge 4x4, If you go into 4 lo, you need to stop and put the truck into neutral. 4 Lo is not shift on the fly. And for on the fly, just to be safe you shoudln't shift over 45. that is my own opinion though.

if you get into a situation where you think you need 4x4 hi and are doing 55+ mph, you should re-consider the heavyness of the right foot... might not be to smart driving that fast in slick conditions

I've always slowed to 40~45 to shift into 4x4 hi...

OK, so no dry pavement but what about coming out of 4WD ? Do I need to be slow, stopped, does it matter? How 'bout the front wheels ? Straight ?

You can either take it out of 4-Hi while sitting still or while moving. I have found that it is easier to disengage while moving, if you do it while coasting under 50 mph. It doesn't tend to thump as hard when the transfer case disengages.
