Open Element on an 01???
Hello all, I have a 01 with a 360 and was wondering if there was any reason I could not put a 14x3 open element air filter on it?? I would like to see what the experts think? Its a lot less expensive to go this route then go with a "cold" air intake. Also would my computer have any issues with doing it or is air just air?
Welcome do DF...
With regards to the open element filter... it can be done. The complaints/issues that I have seen come up regularly are:
1. It seems much louder (some people like, some people don't)
2. If you go off road a lot, you need to be careful that water will not get up and wet/ruin you filter.
I have a 01 as well... and I have made that change. No real complaints...

I have an 01, and it depends on the open air cleaner you choose on whether the 3" will fit or not. I used the Mr. Gasket 1408 or 1480 I believe and swaped the filter element for a 2.5" one. The Mr. Gasket kit comes with a raised base (which is why 3" is hard to fit). After I swaped to the fastman, I was able to clear a bigger element so... I eventually did get a 3" filter in, but... will be rather hard if you choose the Mr. Gasket setup like I did without the modified throttle body. There is also the Edelbrock setup etc. Check this out for more info

I've personally tried three different air intake set-ups. I've tried the K&N FIPK cold air intake kit, I've tried the mopar open element set-up with the K&N filter, and I'm currently running the volant intake kit with the air scoop. Firstly, none of these intakes make THAT much of a difference. You will feel a slight increase in power in the midrange, but that's about it. Truthfully, I think getting power out of these trucks comes down to the torque converter, gearing, and getting into the motor. All of these bolt ons are minimal. My most effective bolt on has been the headers and exhaust, and even that is minimal.
01DodgeRam360 is right. your choice of intake isn't really going to make that much difference. You really don't gain that much at all if any. Most people are mislead by the 10hp claim or whatever it may be. When you look at the rpm's your at when you aparently get that gain.... ask yourself how long your going to be in that rpm range. Odds are, for a short second if ever. No one drives there truck at 5200rpm's constantly (at least I hope not). In my case I got the mr. gasket setup off amazon for $7.87 as a price mistake, so I figured if it didnt show a difference, it was well worth the 7.87 just to give me something to mess around with over the weekend. My friend hears a hiss with his FIPK setup which makes him think hes getting mega power. (just the sound of air getting sucked through the plastic tube) lol. I like the open air cleaner because it frees up the engine bay, plus it adds a little sound too... with the wooshing with the incomming air when your in the gas. Check out that link I posted for more info. If you (like myself) just want something to keep you occupied, give her a shot.
