Default No dome lights No radio i cannot figure it out

Ok, i have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 slt laramie ext cab.. i decided to run an amp and subs to have some good sound. i ran a power wire through the firewall, under dash and into the cab for the amp. that wire i had to a switch chafed on a piece of metal and shorted out. i had smoke rolling out everywhere.
my dome lights radio and locks didnt work due to a blown fuse. i replaced it and the lights went on for a second, then the fuse blew. so i put a bigger fuse in, everything works except the dome lights and radio now.. i put the smaller fuse back in and hasnt blown but still no lights or radio.. has this happen to anyone?

I cannot see the wireing harness well but from what i can see nothign is burnt up. does the body computer control that stuff? i dont want to have to have the dash taken out that would suck! is there anything else i can look for?

Welcome to DF...

It is always a bad idea to put a bigger fuse in... they have certain ratings for a reason.

My guess is that when you put the bigger fuse in, it allowed the rest of a shorted wire to burn up... Once that happend, the smaller fuses won't pop becuase the short is burned out.

You should visit this link... and download the FSM https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen-ram-tech/41924-merry-christmas-guys.html

It will have all the wiring schematics for your truck, and will be very helpful for you in troubleshooting this problem.

Did only 1 fuse blow, or was it multiples? I suspect that it was Fuse 12, which is a 10A fuse that supplies both your radio and interior lights.

Post up some detials and I'll try and help you out. You should be able to figure this out with a little digging around and taking some test measurments.

Not sure if you have a factory or aftermarket stereo unit... but many of those units have their own fuse in them... Won't fix the interior light problem... but might fix the radio problem.

Good luck,
Cartman

hey thanks i'll take a look at the diagram. its an aftermarket cd player, what happened was when the wire started smoking and blew the fuse i took it out and replaced it with a 10amp which is what it had in the first place. It blew it in about 1-2 seconds. so after that one blew i put a 20amp in and i didnt happen to notice if the lights turned on at all but, my locks and the sound of my door open worked again.
also randomly my tail light fuse under the hood was blown.. i dont know if that had anything to do with that same thing but, ive checked every fuse and they r fine... and yes i checked the fuse in back of the cd player and that is fine. all i know is long rides with no cd player sucks haha.
