Default Rear brakes grab when wet/damp

When there is dew in the morning, my rear brakes grab suddenly when making the first stop of the day. It is very violent. In rainy weather, the first stop will lock up the left rear and I think the right side as well. On dry mornings I don't notice anything abnormal. What causes the brakes to react to moisture this way? Its annoying as hell.

Do you have any crap in your drums? Mine started doing that after I went 4 wheeling. Turned the drums, replaced the pads and cleaned it all out. Symptoms went away.

Mine do that also, find that it happens on rainy days or when there is dew on the windsheild (when its not in the garage).
I just drive with the brakes on a little, it goes away quickly.

I know ford had a TSB for their trucks doing it, and it was related to the material of the shoes. (TSB 01192).

in the TSB it states to replace with a different brake kit.

my 01 does it too. even if you just ride the brake easy trying to dry it out, it'll still grab like hell the first time.

I've had this happen. Worked on it some but couldn't find anything I thought was related. I just replaced the bent adjuster I found.

Do the others having this issue have aftermarket or OEM brake shoes?

I've only had that happen after going through a car wash and getting the wheel wash option. Moisture gets on the drum and when you apply the brake it's pushing but slipping cause of the water. Then it dries and grabs like hell. I don't know how you'd avoid this just from dew though. I doubt even making sure the star wheel hole had a plug would be enough. Do you set your parking brake? I wonder if having them against the drum for the night would at least give you a dry spot. (assuming they are adjusted properly)

Mine do it too and only when its raining or dew. I turned my drums, replaced the rears and still they do it. Im the only one out of my group of Dodges that has this problem.. Dunno why but after the first hard stop it goes away.

if i had to guess cause mine do it also, is because the slight bit of dew on the inside of the drum causes a slight coating of rust giving the pad more to grab on, and once u use the brakes the first few times the rust clears off and goes back to normal

Hmmmmm, so I'm not the only one with this issue. The truck has been acting this way for a year or two, but it got much more violent after having brake work done at Canadian Tire. (I only went there 'cause it was an emergency repair and I was 3 hours from home). 'Guess I'll take it back to them and get it looked at.
