P0601/Death Flash Computer Replacement Questions
Hey guys, first post here. Looks like a great site!
I have searched a ton through all the old posts related to this and still have a few questions.
I have a 2001 Ram 5.2L with the death flash and recently had the dreaded P0601 check engine code come up with 117K miles on the truck. I found someone parting a 2001 w/ the same engine and I guess ill try that computer and see how it does. Before I do this I want to ask if any performance programmers can eliminate this problem when they reflash the pcm? Im assuming a hypertech or superchips would not cure the P0601 but what about a B&G flash? I intend to get a tuner anyway and wanted to make sure I wasnt wasting my time buying another computer if a reflash would fix this possibly. thanks for any help.

The SCT uses custom tunes, designed for your engine and your specific upgrades/modifications. The Hypertech and Superchips are generic, "canned" tunes that work great for a stock engine, but the more you upgrade, the more the Hypertech/SC starts holding you back. Any of the above is better than stock, but if you're going to be spending $300, might as well save up for a couple more benjamins and buy the best.
I believe its Hometheaterman that always says... do it right or don't do it at all.
My two cents.

I agree SCT is the way to go. I have a tweecer in my 5.0 Mustang so I can customize my tune for my many mods on it. For this truck a canned tune or mopar computer is all I would need, I wont be changing anything on it, I just want to get the power back lost from the death flash. My only other question was if some of the tuners would overwrite the part of the computer giving my P0601 code or if my computer is trashed alltogether and I need to start over with another one.
btw, I have searched for a mopar performance computer for my truck and have never seen any listed for an 01, they always stop at 2000! Will that work if I can find one??

They did not make them for the 2001, you can try at your own risk. Probably stopped manufacturing as they knew they were in the redesign process in '01 for the 3rd gens.
Unfortunately, the P0601 code is too generic to know exactly what is wrong with the PCM. You can try to save a little money by going to the dealer and asking them to reflash the PCM with a standard program and if the problem clears, go ahead with the Superchips, hypertech, SCT, or whatever.
