I think the 96 has a 46RH? and your 01 has a 46RE so it is a different trans. You might run into connector problems or something stupid. If you want to swap, just get another 46RE and call it a day to leave the guessing out of the equation. Wish ya luck!

1996 was the first year for the 42RE/46RE and OBD II, so it should fit fine if they are both V8s (46RE) or are both V6s (42RE). However, there is quite a gap in years, may be some sensor or other minor differences or something, I'd wait until a couple of our tranny experts get on here to confirm 100%.

The guy that has the trans. said it would work but I will have to put my sensors on it, just want to make sure 100% before I drive 6 hours each way to get it. They both are 318s and 4wd so that is good, right? Anyone know of any websites that would help with this?

Thanks!!

Thanks for setting me straight jason.w I thought 96 was the last year for RH, but I had it backwards and its the first year for RE.

You need to put the 2001 solenoid and sensor on it. Just go buy a new governor pressure sensor and solenoid and put them on the 96 transmission. The old gov. pressure sensor and solenoid probably played a part in the failure. You will also need to swap over the internal wiring harness from your 01 trans. Not that bad of a job.

Other than that the rest is pretty much identical.

Those 2 parts you mentioned is what the transmission shop replaced a year ago, then it started doing the same thing, so I took it back and they tell me it needs replaced or rebuilt and now it is really bad (after they looked at it) so I think they did something to it so they wouldn't have to do the job for the warranty. What could they have done and can I fix it?

Maybe they didnt replace them. They could have just cleaned them off. Thats what makes these two pieces act up, they get caked with metal. If you clean them off really well, you can get some more life out of them.

If you fluid is burnt then its time to go for a rebuild or get the used unit. But if the fluid is fine then look in to replacing those two pieces. They are really easy to replace.

I work at a salvage yard and as far as a direct drop in, most Dodge trannys are one year only for the most part. If you have extensive transmission knowledge and skills I'm sure you could take enough parts off the original to make almost any of the od trannys work, but I'd suggest not doing so.

Direct drop in, no, but if you use the old wiring harness and buy a new sensor and/or solenoid or two (like MonteC suggested), they can work fine.

From 1996 to 2001, the transmissions themselves were identical. Its just some of the wiring and sensors outside the tranny, so to speak, that pretty much changed.
