Default Cooling issues

Hey guys,
Im new to the forum but im looking for some help. I have a 01 ram 1500 4x4 5.9 and im having some cooling issues. when it reaches optimum temp. for ab 3 min my temp gauge will spike to 260 then drop back down( it does this at idle and at highway speed) i only drive 10 2 and from work but it does it 2-3 each way. at first i thought it was my thermostat but the problem has continued since then... coolant level is fine and clean i was thinking a failed water pump but ive heard of people replacing and entire cooling system and this problem continuing... any ideas or help would be appreciated. ty in advance
