Default 2002 47re?

The 2002 model 2500s have the 47re transmission right? Were there any more available auto trans? Is the 47re as bad as the 46re? How can I tell which trans it has if there are other available trans?

If the diesel was an automatic, yes, I believe they were the 47RE. Or if you find a V10 automatic, its a 47RE (if they made those for the 2002 model year).

As far as problems go, I don't think they have as many as the 46RE, but I'm no expert.

The basic design and inner workings of the 46re and 47re are IDENTICAL. The differences come from the parts they beefed up in the 47re. The 47re has a different case due to the engines it stays behind and the different rear band setup. Also it has a slightly different reverse servo. The reverse band is much larger than the 46re, as is the drum it rides on. The 47re has steel 4 or 5 pinion planets instead of the 3 or 4 pinion aluminum planets, same design though. The input shaft is bigger making the ID of the pump stator larger. More clutches and steels stuffed into the forward and direct drums, 2nd gear band remains the same. Valve body is pretty much the same, just different size holes for the separator plates. The o/d unit holds more clutches in its two clutch packs and has a six pinion steel planet.

They both suffer from sup par converters from the factory and the whole electronic governor system that fails routinely.

so basically they're similar but the 47re is beefed up. So how much hp over stock will this pos tc support? and second if all the parts are in good working order in the 47re which parts should be beefed up or rebuilt etc. i'm guessing the tc rite? or would it be better just to rebuild the whole damn thing. I'm asking cuz I found an amazing deal on an 02 diesel.

I dont know what the HP capacity is on the torque converters. Contact a company called Percision of New Hampton, Inc. They carry a heavy duty converter for the 46,47,48 RE. Billet back, funace brazed, top of the line converter clutch.

If everything is in good working order id just throw a new TQ in it along with the new gov. pressure soleniod and sensor.

Youre going to have trouble getting that 47re from a desiel to fit behind a gas motor, IIRC. The bellhousings have a different bolt pattern.
