1996 5.2 emergancy Please help
Good morning fellow Mo Nutz. I am more of a big Block guy so im venturing into a world with my 5.2. A quick little insite. My brother has a 96 4x4 5.2 that was in desperate need of an oil pump. Well fast forward a year...while he was camping he got a little squirly and the engine started knocking...what happend next was interesting. on the way home im not sure what gave way first..the rod bolts or the rod. number 4 rod snapped in half and lodged againts the block stoping the engine instantly. He was doing about 25 - 30 mph at the time. My first question is...The crank doesnt show any significant damage but im worried that with that much force coming to a sudden stop might have twisted the crank. Is this possible? secon question is about interchangability. Money is the difference between riding the bus and fixing the engine. So what years can i scrounge parts from? Is there any danger spots i should look for on the block or should I toss it and look for another to rebuild. Any input would seriously help.

i wouldn't think that it could twist the crank, it would probably just break. i would just throw in a rod from a 92-01 magnum engine and call it a day. it may run for quite a few more miles this way and its defineley worth a try otherwise you would have to pull the engine and buy a salvage one to put in, rebuild, or buy new.

absolutely, or else something else is going to break. i think the rods from the 5.2 and the 5.9 magnum are the same but i'm not positive, someone else will have to verify that. obviously you will want to replace the rod bearings too. while your down there i would recommend rolling in new main bearings too, couldn't hurt and worn main bearing can cause low oil pressure. so at least check the clearance on one
