Does a code reader give you anything different then just using the key switch off/on 3 times?

Depending on which one you buy, they do give you info about the codes also. And not only that , but they work on a multitude of various vehicles, and IIRC 98 and up rams will not give codes with the key on/off check.

What's an IIRC 98 and up ram? Works on my 01, is it a different system?

IIRC = If I Remember Correctly and 98 and up ram= 98 and up ram.

Anyway, maybe it just doesn't work if it doesn't have any codes to show. Either way, I have an expensive scanner, but I have tried the key method even with a CEL and it didn't do anything. But, If it works on Hutch's 2001 I must be wrong and thinking of a different vehicle.

Oohh, ok. I was trying to be smart, I found the key method via search on here 2 weeks ago when I had a check engine light. Know nothing about it outside of it worked great.

Doesn't mean the truck is fixed, but babysteps.
