I feel your pain with the lay-off...in the same boat. I got out of the military back in July...not a good move. Then got laid off from my new job a few weeks ago... At first I felt like a mooch for drawing unemployment until I found out that it does not come from tax payer money, but that it is actually paid by your prior employer. So you are not being a bum by any means...you are simply getting more money from the company you worked for, which you likely deserved in the first place.
