Jack up the rear wheels, put it in drive, and listen again. Just remember to apply the brakes before shifiting back to park. Could be a u-joint, maybe the starter is hanging up, or just something rubbing the drive train.
I think I have the same noise. I havent been able to track it down yet either. Mine sounds more like squeaky rubber or plastic though? I just started ignoring it like the rattles my Ranchos make. [:'(]
I have a similar squeek on my truck since the day I bought it. I thought it was the e-manifold heat shield, or suspension but I've come to the conclusion that I think it's the motor mount. It is there only when the motor is in drive and there is a load on it. The mount is not broken in anyway, I checked and it looks fine, just squeeks...
I think I have this exact noise in my 2001 5.9ltr Ram. I think mine only happens when the steering wheel is centered or to the left though. It seems to dissapear when I turn the wheel to the right? What is going on I can't find a thing
OK. I've got you're fix! My 2000 Ram was doing the same exact thing and was driving me crazy. The noise is coming from your shift linkage. The exact point it's coming from is the lower end of the vertical linkage shaft attached to your steering column. The shaft clips into a rubber bushing, which is what's making the noise. Lube it with some good lithium grease or something similar, not WD-40 or penetrating oil. Heck, while you're down there you might as well lubricate all attaching points of the linkage. Let me know how it does.
