oh boy...I learnt a big lesson !!
newbie here...my first time to do a ``Ram job`` to change the radiator, hoses and thermostat. Also did the distributor cap, rotor and plug wires.
Did it all and filled the system with coolant.
Started up first turn, and the temp gauge went to red after 5 mins.
Rad was cold, hoses were cold, resevoir was empty and motor was HOT.
Loosened the rad cap and lots of cold coolant came out, then air then hot.
Ok,,,started it up again, and while running I filled it up with coolant and everything went back to normal.
MY LESSON: do not fill the system with coolant with engine off.

not ****! lol they sell a coolant fill kit right next to the coolant.... you may want to check your heater to see if you have heat... if not you may have an air bubble in the system!
