Apparently quoting the owner's manual isnt good enough, so lets break it down.

4HI- tranfering power thru the transfer case to the front axle in addition to the rear axle. YOU CAN SHIFT ON THE FLY IN DRIVE!!!

4LO- transfering power thru the transfer case to the front and rear axle and lowering the gear ratio!!!! Hence the name 4LO. Of course you have to be stopped in park or neutral b/c you are changing the gear ratio to both the front and rear axles!!!

1++++ Read the manual. You can shift into 4hi at any speed up to 55. 4lo must be at a stop.

Cool

Hey thanks to all for their info. I guess I am not jerking it hard enough or fast enough (minds out the gutter, LOL). I guess unless absolutely necessary I am just going to be stopped when I shift into it. Makes me feel better! Again thanks.

Mine shifts into 4hi more easily when I'm moving. The manual wouldn't tell you you could do it if it wasn't made for it!

Basically if its a manual you can put in the clutch and do it on the fly if its an auto it can be done but you will hear gear clashing because all the gears in the transfer case are still rotating and are not syncro'd
