Default Double leaf springs?

I took some iron pipes and junk to the city dump last weekend in my 96 ram 2500 V10. When I pulled onto the scale after unloading the weight that I supposedly brought in was 2,853lbs. I was confused.. My truck can't carry that much! When I looked at the rear suspension I noticed that there are double leaf springs. There is also a 5th wheel hitch. I thought that that much weight would snap the axel. I didn't even notice that the truck was overloaded because it didn't slump down that much and I was cruising at 80 on the interstate. Stopping was a pain but it always is. The truck already weighs 7,000lbs plus all that and then brakes that are suitable for a gocart.. coulda been bad. Anyways.. How much do the double leaf springs add to the capacity? Am I lucky that my truck didn't fold in half or snap an axel? I guess it's a good thing that I have really good Michelin tires. I'm dumbfounded but proud... and I'm not doing it again!!
