Default Bad Torque Converter?

ok, the truck is a '97 1500 4x4 with the 46re in it. I'm running 2 after market coolers (bypassed stock) and had the trans rebuilt 20k miles ago. When I had the trans rebuilt I didn't replace the TC (I know..). Well recently the trans temp has been running high, peaking at it's worst two days ago when it hit 245*. I found that if I kept it below 55mph it would run around 180*, normal it runs at 150-165*. Today I was driving in to work at 50mph with O/D off and it started slipping into 2nd, RPM's going up to 3k. If I pumped the gas it would slip back into 3rd (D), did this a couple times. By the time I got to work it felt like it was slipping out of gear compleatly, i.e. RPM's would shoot up but no acceleration. Is this a symptom of the TC? If I can limp the truck home (50 miles) can I just replace the TC? I really hope I didn't toast my 20k trans...

If the TC has taken a dump then the whole unit is going to need a rebuild. When the TC goes bad it spews liquified aluiminum EVERYWHERE. It gets in the valvebody, in the clutch packs and in the lube circuit.

Sorry bud, no matter how you cut it you need a rebuild and a new TC.

Thatnks for the replies, the trans gave out compleatly on my way home yesterday. I'm so pissed that I only got 20k out of a rebuilt trans. Had my mechanic buddy do it on the side so no warrenty. Looks like another rebuil is in order. I don't really need the truck until spring so I thought about attempting the rebuild on my own. I'm good with a wrench and have done motor swaps and trans/clutch swaps on other cars so I think it's in my capability range. Is there a good step by step on rebuilding a 46RE anyone reccomends? Any special tools I'll need to get?
