Default Shifter question-- goes into gear w/o depressing the brake

This may be normal, and even if it's not, I personally like it, but my truck will go into gear w/o depressing the brake. Is this a standard "feature" of a '99 auto?

The last 2nd gen Ram I drove was my late ex father in law's 95 360, and I don't remember if his was like that or not.

Hmm, I never tired to pull the key out while running. I know some cars and trucks can do that. I will have to try that out later. That would be awesome care there are times I want to keep my truck running, but also locked.

My 1997 does that to. I just figure that these trucks were built before it became federally mandated that there be a brake pedal lock with the shifter.
I sometimes think that its cool, but other days I realize just how bad of an idea it actually is not to have the lock on there.
About three years back the whole family and I went to Bass pro, and when we were done we decided to go next door to the brown derby to pick some "stuff up". My mother was the only one that went in, and at the time my step dad was in the drivers seat on our F-350. We were sitting there shooting the chit when an old beat up Cadillac comes rolling up and parks next to us. In the car was a younger mom maybe in her twenty s and there was a three or four year old kid in the car. She got out of the car and left the kid in there with the engine running. We were sitting in the truck watching this kid woller the entire cab of that car when he found the gear shift. That kid grabbed alhold of it and threw it into reverse and away goes the car. Thankfully the car slammed into a telephone pole and stopped right before it could pop the curb and go flying into the middle of a buy intersection. When that car smacked the pole all you could see was the kid go flying into the back glass. The sad part of the whole ordeal was when the mother came flying out of the liqouer store, here my stepdad and I were standing seeing if the kid was ok, and the damn bit^^ was more concerned about her car than her kid.
Some people just amaze me....

Mine is the same way, I can shift out of park without the Brake, but only while the key is turned to the "On" Position. I can also pull my key out, which is nice when I notice I want my air bag on/off while im driving.
