Clogged catalytic converter can cause P0300 Random misfire code. it'll also affect idle quality

A bad IAC will kill the Idle and cause the low RPM problems/backfiring thru TB. Does the idle surge at all when you can get it to idle?

If the timing chain has never been changed, it's shot. Mine was done well before I changed it at 70K.

Pulled the IAC plug with the engine idling today....and nothing happened. I would have expected a change in the idle, but it didn't sound any different at all. I'll have one awaiting me in the morning when I get to work and will change it.

I'm going to cut the cat off completely, but I'll post back and let you all know if it was clogged once it's off the truck. I'm actually fairly sure that it's not in good health, though. It's hard to describe, and I'm reluctant to blame the cat at this point, but it does seem that the engine isn't breathing properly if I really step on the throttle. A kind of choking that stops just short of actually bogging the engine. With the other possible issues, it's just hard to fully blame the cat at this point. Luckily, I live in Alabama...and there's no need to blame it if it's no longer on the truck.

Timing chain- As I said in the OP, I bought this thing at an auction off of a lumber yard. I have *******ly no idea of it's mechanical and maintenance history.

Is there any progress in your problem? I seem to have the same problem you described.

Recheck your distributor and make sure the wires are in the right spots. Sounds like you might be one off.
