Question my seatbelts lock until engine turned off ???

hello all -- any help here is appreciated. I just got this 98 ram 1500 and love it so far, but unfortunately have a sketchy history on the truck. one of the previous owners replaced the interior (why? I don't know) and I am wondering if the seatbelts were not compatable or something because if you lock them by pulling too quick on them they won't release unless you turn off the engine... I'm pretty sure that is not a 'safety feature'. are these belts defective or installed improperly or??? Thanks for the help -- this is extremely annoying if they get tightened and I'm on the highway and I have to wait for a rest stop...

Sounds like the seatbelt has failed and should be replaced because of safety issues. There is a switch that is activated by inertia that will make it lock.

Can you try disconnecting the switch or pulling the fuse to see if that stops it. Just make sure you put it all back. It would at least show if it's an electrical problem or not.

The switch should be mounted under the center console. Maybe its loose.
