Replacing tie rod end
Hey everyone.
The tie rod end in my truck is gone, so I went and bought a new one. I undid the nut on the end, and the two that hold those "clamps" on the linkage itself, but how are you supposed to unthread the tie rod end itself? Liquid wrench and a pipe wrench to free it up? Would it be easier to remove the entire rod (from the pitman to the tie rod end), put it in a bench vise and undo the end?

well, for replacing the tie rod end, only loosen one of the two bolts on the clamp, obviously loosen the side that the tie rod end is on, then count how many turns until the end is off, use a monkey wrench, then replace with new end by tightening it the same amount of turns that it took to get off, this will keep your front end alignment somewhat on track, remember to tighten down the bolt
The castle nut that secures the tie-rod end should be torqued to the correct value. If the cotter pin won't make it to the hole, then *TIGHTEN* the nut to the next available slot. Never back it off for the slot to line up with the hole.
may wanna heat the thing up with a torch if you have one, and i would count how many turns it takes to remove, and also take a marker and mark on the threads where your old one ended, double precaution in case u miscount on or off. you also may need a pickle fork to get the old end out of the hole sometimes they dont like to let go even after u take the castle nut off
I went to the shop today and had one of their guys install it. He had this special wrench that was notched and hooked onto the sleeve that the tie rod threads into. Once that broke loose it took all of five minutes to bolt everything back together.

BTW - "u" is a letter of the alphabet, it is not a personal pronoun.
