Default Headlight question....no worky

1999 3/4ton 5.9 GAS motor.

Just bought this truck. Headlights and parking lights don't work on the switch. The previous owner installed a toggle switch for the parking lights, so they work on the toggle switch but not on the stock dash switch. So I checked the bulb....good (the little spring is still there and not burned up). Next was power.......had continuity. So why wouldn't they work? If the switch was out would it still get power?

BTW the fuel pump may be out (maybe a wiring issue?) and I don't know if that is related.

Thanks for any help guys!

Robert

The switches are known for problems because they can't handle the amount of current Chrysler decided to put through them. I'd try replacing the switch first, see if that solves anything.

I doubt the fuel pump would have anything to do with the lights, but I suppose weirder things have happened.

first check all your fuses and relays. There are several things the power goes through before it gets to the lights. I beleive the headlights are switched on the ground side of the curcuit, pull out the switch and check with an ohmmeter to see if all the positions are functional, if they aren't then that could be one of your problems, but it should be replaced anyway. Also dont forget that your headlights have a lo-beam and a hi-beam, either or both can be burnt out, this also means that power has to travel through the mutifunction switch (turn signal, wipers, hi-lo), this requires a set of "tamper proof" torques bits to remove, i think a #15. pick up a Haynes manual, or a factory service manual is better, these will supply you with a bit more info (not alot) but enough to get you going.
